2004/05 Player of the Year
The
2004/05 Season was disappointing in terms of results, with only 2 wins. However,
the race for the Player of the Year was quite tight. 3 bowlers took 20 wickets
or more and 2 batsmen scored 300 runs or more.
Paul Sullivan was the early favourite, scoring 3 fifties before the Christmas break including an 84 in the first match. Joe Zaccheo was also in the running with some good scores and a season haul of 26 wickets. Nathan Kelly (23 wickets) and Patrick Marrins (23 wickets) were also contenders.
The eventual winner was Rob Squillacioti, voted by his peers as the most valuable player. Rob only scored 285 runs, but had the best average of 28.50. Only two other players had averages in the 20’s; Paul Sullivan (23.08) and Carl Hanebuth (22.44).
Unfortunately Rob had to miss a few games due to his university commitments. His availability would have potentially provided the impetus for more wins; in particular against Hurlstone Park in Rounds 2 and 9.
Rob’s assistance when fielding was also regarded by his peers a valuable contribution during the season. He demonstrated good leadership qualities that may have seen him captain the team in a year or two. However, Rob took the decision to move on and try playing at a higher level.
We wish him all the best with his endeavours and thank him deeply for his contribution to the club over the two years he played. Rob played 24 matches, scored 537 runs at an average of 22.38, captured 3 wickets and took 14 catches. He also introduced countless new players to the club.
