CAPTAIN'S REPORT 2003/04
I would like to start this years report by thanking the entire KWAAPOC squad for their
time and commitment through a tough competition. Our success ensured the season
stretched into March, a fine achievement from a group of talented cricketers.
At the start of the season our club set out a few goals. Our main objective was to attract
new players, encourage the returning players and to build on the success the club has
relished from previous seasons. I am delighted to say that not only did we meet our
objectives we exceeded them and I am proud and honoured to have captained the
2003/04 KWAAPOC Cricket team.
The old saying is you judge success by your win loss ratio and not finishing in the final
would be regarded as a failure, but certainly our year was NOT a failure. We finished the
regular season as Minor Premiers for the second time since the inception of the club four
years ago, unfortunately the championship itself eluded us by narrowly losing in the
Semi-final to Hurlstone Park CC. However, to be able to captain young talent like
Robert Squillacioti, John Neville, Patrick Marrins, James Kite, Chris Parks, John
Zaccheo and the senior players, Joe Zaccheo, Charlie Mellino, Deen Nair, Peter Judson,
Tony Banboukjian, David Foreman, David Newman, Carl Hanebuth, and Paul Brown
was a great experience and such a delight. To see everyone enjoy and improve their
cricket was a privilege. We were a competitive unit and played some very good cricket
and it’s a credit to all that we were the most feared team in the competition.
Each and every player contributed to the teams’ success either with the bat, ball or an
outstanding piece of fielding. I would like to congratulate John Neville for his
magnificent century (107) in the last round of the competition, Tony Banboukjian with
his elegant and well complied ninety (90) in round three, Charlie Mellino (74), Robert
Squillacioti (66), James Kite (50,64), Joe Zaccheo (58) and myself (87,50,68). But this
season’s performers honours go to our tremendous bowling attack, spear headed by
Patrick Marrins. Pat amassed 41 wickets at an average of 11.12 with an incredible
economy rate of 2.71. The amazing bowling wizardry of John Neville, who can bowl a
cricket ball either at pace or at spin with so much variation and accuracy. The hard
working Chris Parks causing batsmen plenty of grief with his pace and was unlucky not
to capture many more wickets. The reliable and consistent line and length bowling of Joe
Zaccheo, the stylish all-rounder Charlie Mellino who would always chip in with a wicket
or two and finally two of the more senior players in the team who wear their heart on
their sleeve and are very much appreciated by all, Peter Judson and Deen Nair. We had a
saying “PAM” (Play And Miss) it was an acronym used that described the ability of
many opposition batsmen when trying to play our bowling attack. Well done guys it was
a pleasure wicket keeping to you and a delight to be part of your success.
Special thanks to David Foreman for his contribution to the team throughout the season.
On numerous occasions David made himself available as 12th man to fill in late in a days
play when the need was required. A special thanks must also go to Robert Squillacioti not
only for his on field assistance which I greatly appreciated but also for bringing along
with him the young talent to the club this season.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Joe Zaccheo for his support as Vice Captain and
the massive effort he puts into the team off the field to ensure we get on the park each week.
To the players, it has been a very enjoyable season and would hope most of you come
back for the following season to build on what we started, and to take care of some
unfinished business – THE CHAMPIONSHIP!
