Welcome to the 2nd annual KWAAPOC Presentation night and Annual Report presentation.
It has been a fairytale season with an end that couldn’t have been scripted with any more
tension, emotion and drama.
The season started with a surprisingly large turn out to the first training session held on
Saturday the 4th of August 2001. The demand for a spot in the KWAAPOC squad was so
high that I had to ask a couple of players to consider playing for a rival club. By the start
of the first game, we had 11 guys commit as full time players. We registered 16 players this
season as opposed to 23 in 2000/01. The consistency in the squad made my job easier.
Thank you to all those who showed an interest and/or played.
The improvement in the team has shown in our performances and results. Last season
Mohammed took the most wickets with 25, and this season we had three bowlers take
more than that. Our bowlers took 192 wickets compared to 134 last season. The batting
was also impressive scoring 2,692 runs compared to 2,443 last year. The average per
wicket increased from 16.96 to 19.64 this season. We scored 12 fifties to only 8 last season.
Centuries were down from 3 to 1. However we had a lot more ‘big’ fifties. 2 x 60, 1 x 70, 2 x 80 &
1 x 90. Our fielding was also a big improver taking 116 catches to 81 and run outs up to 11 from 5.
Greg asserted himself as our best batsmen scoring 465 runs consistently at an average of 31.00.
I (Joe) came in second with an in-consistent 432 at an average of 33.23. (Before the final I was
on 279 and an average of 23.25) Noel had a massive improvement to last season scoring 4 fifties
and totalling 351 at 23.40. Gino also surged up the stats in the final with his special 99. He ended
up on 341 at 26.23. Sam was a little down from last year but scored two devastating blows of 74
and 83.
After refusing to bowl myself (Joe) regularly last season and taking only 9 wickets, I dropped
myself down the batting order and had a regular bowl. This was after much insistence from
guys like Greg and Sam. They’re obviously good judges because I had an absolute blinder
taking mammoth 45 wickets at an average of 11.56. This equals the C & W.S.C.A. record for
7th division set last year. This included 3, 5 wicket hauls and a very rare and exceptionally
exciting hat trick; KWAAPOC’s only one to date. Noel came in second with 35 at 13.17 taking
2, 5 wicket hauls and Sam third with 30 at 14.17.
Now we come to the most phenomenal performance of the Season. Greg’s wicket keeping.
Last season the wicket keeper took 11 catches, Greg taking 8. This year he took 38. I think
Greg’s ability as a keeper is grossly understated often taken for granted. Add his sensational
catching at keeper to all his runs he scores as an opener and you will see why he was my choice
for the Player of the Year Award. Well Done!
The catch of the year and most improved player of the year, especially for his bowling, goes
to David. He was at an absolute horizontal, catching the ball fully stretched in one hand.
Amazing! There was some really classy catches taken during the season, but for me this was
the most spectacular. I was taken aback by David’s bowling improvement. From struggling to
hit the pitch to getting it on line was impressive. Others were Noel for his batting from last
season, Gino’s improvement in his bowling towards the end of the season and Peter for
looking a lot more solid with his batting. I want to add a special note for Peter’s fielding
especially his catching. He took 21 catches for the season, more that twice as many as
the next player.
I would like to mention you all, because you can’t win a Premiership and not have all the
players put in. Well done to all and a well deserved Premiership. Other achievement like
the KWAAPOC sign, the KWAAPOC Rock (may need altering) and the KWAAPOC
website will well and truly make this a memorable season.
Thank you for all your help off the field, especially to Sam, again. We often talk 3 to 4 times
a week whether it is strategy or administratively, it’s good to have someone to bounce ideas
off. Everyone obliged whether with scoring, umpiring or packing up. I think if there was an
award for the best team off the park that we’d win that too.
Noel has left for his adventure overseas. As an original KWAAPOC supporter and player,
I’d like to thank him for his contribution over the last two seasons. Thank you to Charlie and
Domenic the Super Sub for filling in as players and in the final as fieldsmen.
Thanks to those who attend the training sessions. I hope these are of benefit. I don’t think
it is a secret that our improved performances come about because of the regular training. We
ended the season with some fielding training and pool sessions. These were worthwhile and
we’ll look at making it a more regular occurrence for next season.
Thank you to the wives/partners and children of KWAAPOC for your support. It is much
appreciated by all the players. Congratulations to Sam & Carmelina, Rustum & Fiona and
Charlie & Elena for recently having children. Good luck to Deen & Nevash and Maria
& myself with our pregnancies over the coming months. Thank you to Jocelyn for her
full time attendance and support at both the semi-final and final. Much appreciated by all
players. Commiserations to Stuart who couldn’t play the final due to work commitments. I
don’t mean to be nasty; but you missed out big time. I hope you enjoyed the season though.
Lastly, I would like to thank KWAAPOC’s no.1 supporter and my no.1 supporter, my wife
Maria. You are the best!
I know I’ve left something or someone out, but thank you to all, it is appreciated by all. Again,
it’s been an absolute pleasure playing with you and being your appointed captain and manager.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Enjoy the night and I hope you find this document worthwhile.
See you all next season!
